Beaches
Pigeon Island
Sri Lanka is a paradise of unlimited sun, sea, golden sand and surf all year around. The coast often twists and curves into little nooks, bays and coves – ideal for romantic hideaways. The Indian Ocean is clear, blue and Peacock bright, at a warm 27°C. The Southwest Coast is at its best for sea adventures between November and April and the East Coast the rest of the year. Diving and Snorkeling in these waters takes you into an entirely different and equally delightful world. Don’t look out for Great White Sharks, they are unheard of in this part of the ocean, but Whales and Dolphin do swim our shores. Sea adventures and watching tours can be easily arranged for you.
Hikkaduwa
A typical beach destination for a budget holiday, which involves lazing on the sand and soaking up the sun and an ideal place for young travellers who are drawn to the nightlife and water sports. There are also a range of other activities that can be enjoyed here, such as diving, snorkeling, surfing, visiting the nearby turtle hatchery or taking a boat trip on Hikkaduwa lagoon, situated in the east side of the town.
Unawatuna
Situated close to the historical town of Galle and the famous Jungle Beach. There is a fine stretch of beach to mingle with locals, street sellers, and souvenir shop vendors. Unawatuna still attracts visitors with its laidback charm and year-round swimming. A semi-circular belt of land, the beach is set in an attractive bay protected at both ends by headlands. At the western end of the beach is a Buddhist Stupa, where good views over the surrounding area can also be found.
Passekudah
Before the civil war, the beaches of Passekuda and Kalkudah along the east coast of Sri Lanka were a huge draw for tourists. Once again open for tourists, these beaches are considered to be attractive spots, boasting white sand, clear blue water and fishing boats in the bay.
Pigeon Island
A short boat ride off the beach and you may visit Pigeon Island which lies 2 km off the beautiful coast of Nilaveli, great for diving, snorkelling and sea bathing. Visitors can enjoy the rare corals, marine animals and of course during the tour observe native and migrant birds.
